Altai Region is located in the South-East of West Siberia and borders on the Novosibirskaya, Kemerovscaya region, Kazakhstan and Altai Respublic. Its territory is 168.0 thousand sq. km.
The region includes 12 cities, 14 towns, 7 urban and 60 rural districts, including German national district. The administrative center is the city of Barnaul with the population of 655.4 thousand people.
The region's population from the data collected on the 1st of January, 1994 is 2686.4 thousand people, consisting of 52.2% of urban and 47.8% of rural inhabitants. Representatives of 110 ethnic groups live in the region. The ethnic structure of the population is as follows: Russians-90.9%, Germans-3.9%, Ucrainians-2.9%, Tatars-0.3%, Chuvashes-0.3%, Altayans-0.1% and others. Two types of landscapes prevail in the region: mountainous in the East and steppe in the West. Considerable areas are covered with taiga forests. Unique band-type pine forests stretch for hundreds kilometers. Rich vegetation combined with the relief contrasts goes along with the variety of wild-life. The region is inhabited by about 300 species of mammals, many kinds of birds, some reptiles, amphibian, fish. The climate is distinctly continental. The winter is frosty and continuous, the summer is hot, short, often dry. The climatic conditions are in general favorable for the development of agriculture. There is enough warmth and light to grow practically all agricultural crops, vegetables, berries and fruits. The largest rivers of the region - the Biya and the Katun - interflow to form one of the main Siberian rivers - Ob. There are about 13 thousand lakes in the region, half of them have fresh water.
